Noiseless, a collection of poetry by Dawn Colclasure

"Our bond can be strong without me hearing your voice.

It’s not a part of what makes you important to me.

I know you wish that I could hear your voice,

but I don’t need to hear your voice for us to be happy."

Dawn Colclasure’s Noiseless is a heartfelt, deeply personal collection that captures various aspects of what it’s like to live with deafness in a world that still remains filled with communication barriers, discrimination, ableism, and misconceptions. Following her participation in several Alien Buddha Press themed anthologies such as Alien Buddha Zine, The Alien Buddha’s Chaos Countdowns, and The Alien Buddha Talks to Animals, this marks Colclasure’s first standalone book with Alien Buddha Press, and it arrives with honesty, courage, and remarkable clarity.

A Deaf burn survivor who lost her hearing at the age of thirteen after acquiring spinal meningitis, Colclasure writes from lived experience, creating poems that explore social isolation, invisible disability, the hearing world’s assumptions, and the struggle to simply belong. Yet these poems are never about defeat. Instead, Noiseless embraces Deaf identity while challenging the idea that deafness is “something to fear.” Through reflections on dreams filled with sound, silent communication, and the desire to be seen rather than “fixed,” Colclasure reminds readers that there is not just ONE way to live with deafness. There are many ways, and every one of them deserves understanding, inclusion, and respect.
